Evergreen Advice for Everyone

Whatever your situation and however you choose to fight back, the following points are likely to help you along your way.

Follow Your Conscience

  • If everyone follows their conscience, we win. Simple as that.
  • Fascism relies on people doing what they’re told. It cannot win against a people who refuse to play along. The Bad Guys do not have the people, the resources, or the determination to make everyone do what they want.
  • Quite a few rich and powerful people, who absolutely know better, have made public shows of sacrificing their conscience to fascism on the altar of cowardice. Screw ’em. When this is over, we all will remember their names and what they did. They’re losers, not trendsetters. You’re better.
  • Whatever happens, you must make your own decisions. Whatever happens, you decide what’s right and wrong, and what you’re going to do about it.
  • Only you can decide what risks you’re willing to take. You have a family to feed. No one wants to see them homeless. Keep your head above water, stay awake to injustice, and fight back when you can.

Don’t Wait for Instructions. There Aren’t Any.

  • “The Resistance” is just a bunch of people all doing their best, mostly in temporary groups that are only coming together on the flow. No one is in charge.
  • There is no single playbook here. Anyone who claims to have one is suffering from delusions of grandeur.
  • The Bad Guys also have no idea what they’re doing, and they’re definitely suffering from delusions of grandeur. Our enemies are mostly a bunch of podcasters, TV talking heads, Crossfit guys, and right-wing crank writers who couldn’t get a real job. They’re great at talking a big game and doing random damage. Following a plan from start to finish? They have no idea.
  • What’s most important is not to do the right thing, but to keep doing something. The Bad Guys cannot possibly win if every civil servant tasked with executing their plans is actually finding creative ways to thwart them.

Organize, Organize, Organize

  • Join up with groups that are already fighting. Examples include:
  • Bring friends and colleagues into the movement. No one can do this alone. Talk to your co-workers. Off-hours, if the workplace is hostile. Leave mysterious pride-flags and stacks of Remember Your Oath flyers on the lunch-room counter. You have options.

Document Everything

  • Take real time notes about any notable events, conversations, or happenings. Date them, and keep personal copies not stored on government property/equipment. Share your notes with trusted confidants who can serve as witnesses.
  • Always get it in writing. If someone gives you a verbal order, ask for it in writing. If they won’t do it, send them an email stating the order they gave you, when they gave it, and asking them to confirm. Even if they don’t respond, you now have written evidence of what they said, and they’re not disputing it.
  • Real-time, written documentation can be used:
    • To protect yourself if you’re blamed for something
    • In future litigation or prosecution against the real wrongdoers
    • To support many of the tactics below

Understand the Consequences

  • Some forms of resistance are not prohibited. Some may constitute a firing offense, if caught. Some could be illegal and result in prosecution.
  • This document is not legal advice. If you are considering any form of civil disobedience, you should seek legal counsel to understand what consequences may follow.
  • In particular, be aware of possible legal consequences related to:
    • Remaining on government property after you are terminated for government service
    • Leaking any sensitive government materials.
  • The Trump administration’s approach to the law has been aggressive and erratic. The administration may respond to any acts of resistance in ways that are unreasonable and/or illegal. This is wrong, but it’s happening.
  • They may take action against you for resisting – but what are they going to do to us all if we don’t resist?
